A Big Man Playing Small
Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus. - Colossians 3:17
A journalism professor disguised himself as a homeless person and spent a few nights on the streets of a large city. He reported that the shelters provided him with sandwiches and soft drinks, but that nobody-not even at a church-run shelter-offered a word of spiritual counsel.
Columnist William Raspberry says that when the church fails to offer spiritual help, it is "playing away from its strength." It's like a 7-foot basketball player who attempts long jumpshots, or when he's near the basket keeps bringing the ball down to chest level before shooting. Coaches refer to a tall player who wastes his height advantage as "a big man playing small."
We are like that basketball player when we focus solely on meeting physical needs but fail to give out the life-transforming salvation message that God has entrusted to us. It's commendable to be kind and generous in providing for others. But if we fail to point them to the answer for their deepest need, if we do not introduce them to Jesus Christ, we are "playing away from our strength." We are doing what any unbeliever could do, and not doing what only we can do. We are like salt that has lost its saltiness (Matthew 5:13), like a light hidden under a basket (vv.14-16), like "a big man playing small." - HVL
Thinking It Over
How can acts of compassion open doors to witness?
Do others think of you not only as a nice person,
but also as a follower of Jesus Christ?
Good deeds are no substitute for the good news.
Matthew 5:13-16
[13] "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.
[14] "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.
[15] Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
[16] In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
* A Huge Difference
Hear, my son .... I have taught you in the way of wisdom. - Proverbs 4:10-11
One is my son's doctor. Another is a popular local TV personality. Several are parents of children who go to school with my son and daughter. Another is well known in the Christian music industry. Some are missionaries. Others work with me at RBC Ministries.
Who are these people? They are students who attended the high school where I taught and where my children have gone to school.
My son Steve and I were looking at names and photos in some old yearbooks not long ago. As I pointed out where those students are today, I was struck by the power of potential.
Who knew what would become of those young people my fellow teachers and I asked to do book reports, diagram sentences, or run sprints and make free throws on the basketball court? But now, with their pathway through life partially complete, I can see that many of them have trusted the Lord and are seeking to honor Him, realizing much of their God-given potential.
In light of Proverbs 3, it's awesome to contemplate what can become of today's youth. If they are taught to walk according to God's wisdom, use the skills He has given them, and follow His leading, they can make a huge difference in whatever future the Lord has in store. - JDB
O Lord of all the upward road,
Keep strong our youth, we pray;
May age and youth together seek
To follow in Thy way. - Niedermeyer
We shape tomorrow's world by what we teach our children today.
Proverbs 3:1-12
[1] My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart,
[2] for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity.
[3] Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.
[4] Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.
[5] Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
[6] in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
[7] Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.
[8] This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.
[9] Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;
[10] then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.
[11] My son, do not despise the LORD'S discipline and do not resent his rebuke,
[12] because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.

* Prepared For His Presence
Prepare the way of the Lord; make His paths straight. - Luke 3:4
Whenever the President of the United States visits a community, local officials cooperate with advance teams to prepare for his coming. His motorcade route is carefully laid out. Streets are repaired and litter is picked up. The offices, auditoriums, and businesses he'll visit are decorated. Those who will meet him put on their finest clothes. Everything possible is done to give him the kind of reception his high position deserves.
If a world leader merits such thorough preparation, certainly the Lord of the universe deserves far more. John, the baptizer and "advance man" for Christ, urged the people to get ready for the Messiah. In fulfillment of the prophecy of Isaiah 40:3-4, he called for the removal of spiritual obstacles (Luke 3:10-14).
1. Mountains of pride and abuse must be leveled.
2. Valleys of human need must be filled.
3. Crooked, immoral paths must be straightened.
4. Rough places of oppression must be made smooth.
Such actions do not save us, but they do reflect a timeless principle: If our hearts are prepared for the Lord, He will walk through the streets of our lives with power and peace.
I wonder, is there anything in our lives that makes us unprepared for His presence? - MRDII

* God Knows Best
As the clay is in the potter's hand, so are you in My hand. - Jeremiah 18:6
Adelaide Pollard was planning to go to Africa as a missionary, but at the last minute she was prevented from going because she hadn't received enough financial support. During a prayer meeting, a dark mood enveloped her. Then the prayer of an elderly woman pierced her darkness: "It's all right, Lord! It doesn't matter what You bring into our lives. Just have Your own way with us!" In that moment Adelaide Pollard surrendered to God's way and found peace.
Later that evening she examined the story of the potter in Jeremiah 18:4. She thought about the vessel that was marred in the potter's hand, and noted that he made it into another vessel, as it seemed good to him. She recognized her need to submit herself to God's will and allow Him to remold her life according to His own design.
A poem began taking shape in her yielded mind: "Thou art the Potter, I am the clay. Mold me and make me after Thy will, while I am waiting, yielded and still." Eventually, in God's time, He allowed Pollard to minister in Africa, England, and across the United States.
God uses the person who sincerely prays, "Have Thine own way, Lord." Ask yourself: Am I letting the great Potter have His own way with me? - JEY
Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Hold o'er my being absolute sway!
Fill with Thy Spirit till all shall see
Christ only, always, living in me. - Pollard
Jeremiah 18:1-10
[1] This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD:
[2] "Go down to the potter's house, and there I will give you my message."
[3] So I went down to the potter's house, and I saw him working at the wheel.
[4] But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.
[5] Then the word of the LORD came to me:
[6] "O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter does?" declares the LORD. "Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.
[7] If at any time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down and destroyed,
[8] and if that nation I warned repents of its evil, then I will relent and not inflict on it the disaster I had planned.
[9] And if at another time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be built up and planted,
[10] and if it does evil in my sight and does not obey me, then I will reconsider the good I had intended to do for it.
* Taming Wild Dogs
Psalms 59:1 - 59:17
For the director of music. [To the tune of] ¡°Do Not Destroy.¡±Of David. A miktam. When Saul had sent men to watch David's house in order to kill him.
1 Deliver me from my enemies, O God; protect me from those who rise up against me.
2 Deliver me from evildoers and save me from bloodthirsty men.
3 See how they lie in wait for me! Fierce men conspire against me for no offense or sin of mine, O LORD.
4 I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me. Arise to help me; look on my plight!
5 O LORD God Almighty, the God of Israel, rouse yourself to punish all the nations; show no mercy to wicked traitors.
Selah
6 They return at evening, snarling like dogs, and prowl about the city.
7 See what they spew from their mouths-they spew out swords from their lips, and they say, ¡°Who can hear us?¡±
8 But you, O LORD, laugh at them; you scoff at all those nations.
9 O my Strength, I watch for you; you, O God, are my fortress,
10 my loving God. God will go before me and will let me gloat over those who slander me.
11 But do not kill them, O Lord our shield, or my people will forget. In your might make them wander about, and bring them down.
12 For the sins of their mouths, for the words of their lips, let them be caught in their pride. For the curses and lies they utter,
13 consume them in wrath, consume them till they are no more. Then it will be known to the ends of the earth that God rules over Jacob.
Selah
14 They return at evening, snarling like dogs, and prowl about the city.
15 They wander about for food and howl if not satisfied.
16 But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.
17 O my Strength, I sing praise to you; you, O God, are my fortress, my loving God.
¢Ê Reflection
Every day I have snarling dogs prowling about me. Daily I feel surrounded by enemies. But most days, fortunately, I experience the same change in perspective that David does in Psalm 59.
Outwardly, nothing changes for David in this passage. Psalm 59 begins with a plea for delivery from enemies and then goes on to describe their methods of ambush and attack. The note introducing the psalm indicates that the inspiration for this passage came from David¡¯s experiences of being in his home surrounded by Saul¡¯s men. David likens them to dogs who speak destructively (¡°spew out swords from their lips¡±[v. 7]) and blasphemously (¡°they say, ¡®Who can hear us?¡¯¡± [v. 7]). By the end of the psalm they¡¯re returned, still snarling, still prowling, though maybe a bit less satisfied and in want. But in essence they are still present and threatening. What has changed is David¡¯s perception.
He calls upon God, pleas with him to ¡°rouse¡± himself and ¡°show no mercy.¡± This is typical of our prayer life. We mentally dwell upon our enemies, real or imagined, crying out for deliverance and protection, all the while proclaiming our innocence. We ask God to be our fortress in time of need.
Our enemies may include co-workers, family, even old friends, but they can also be found lurking in our self-destructive thoughts, our own selfishness and pride, in habitual sins that we can¡¯t seem to shake. These, too, are prowling dogs that we face daily that speak blasphemy and pursue our destruction. Like David, it¡¯s key that we gain a prayerful perspective regarding our personal enemies.
Verses 9 and 10 are the turning point. From start to finish in this passage, the ravenous dogs are present. Again, the change comes in David¡¯s perspective. David, just as we should, turns his eyes from the enemies before him and focuses them upon God¡¯s strength, his love and protection. David claims the promises of God¡¯s presence and goodness. The dogs remain, but David remembers what¡¯s real and true and good in God. From this reality and through his praise, David draws renewed strength. Such is the nature of praise. It brings transformation.

* The Blessing of Forgiveness
¢Ê Today's Passage / Psalms 65:1 - 65:13
For the director of music. A psalm of David. A song.
1 Praise awaits you, O God, in Zion; to you our vows will be fulfilled.
2 O you who hear prayer, to you all men will come.
3 When we were overwhelmed by sins, you forgave our transgressions.
4 Blessed are those you choose and bring near to live in your courts! We are filled with the good things of your house, of your holy temple.
5 You answer us with awesome deeds of righteousness, O God our Savior, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas,
6 who formed the mountains by your power, having armed yourself with strength,
7 who stilled the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, and the turmoil of the nations.
8 Those living far away fear your wonders; where morning dawns and evening fades you call forth songs of joy.
9 You care for the land and water it; you enrich it abundantly. The streams of God are filled with water to provide the people with grain, for so you have ordained it.
10 You drench its furrows and level its ridges; you soften it with showers and bless its crops.
11 You crown the year with your bounty, and your carts overflow with abundance.
12 The grasslands of the desert overflow; the hills are clothed with gladness.
13 The meadows are covered with flocks and the valleys are mantled with grain; they shout for joy and sing.
¢Ê Reflection
It was one of those days. I had several items on my to-do list, and time and circumstances weren¡¯t cooperating. There was a Bible study lesson to prepare, cookies to bake for a preschool party, deadlines to meet for work and a dozen little errands to run for my husband, who was buried in papers, reading and projects for his seminary courses. My stress level was through the roof and, unfortunately, my children were bearing the brunt of it.
That night as I was tucking my 3-year-old in bed, I finally took a breath and saw what my day must have been like for her. I was grieved by my unnecessary harshness and gave her a long hug with my heartfelt apology. With her big brown eyes peering into mine, she smiled sweetly and said, ¡°That¡¯s OK. You¡¯re still the best mommy I ever had!¡± Talk about forgiveness! God used my daughter¡¯s beautiful response to my sin to show me a picture of his unconditional love and abundant goodness.
This kind of grace is what King David is proclaiming in today¡¯s passage. His hymn begins by praising the Lord for forgiving the sins of his people. And apparently it was more than just a few white lies and occasional speeding tickets. David says his people were ¡°overwhelmed by sins¡±(v. 3). Aren¡¯t we all? Yet, God¡¯s goodness doesn¡¯t stop with forgiveness, although that would be more than enough. David continues, saying they are ¡°blessed¡± and ¡°filled with good things¡± because they belong to God. He spends the rest of the psalm listing all the ways God has poured out blessings on his sinful, undeserving chosen ones.
David is thankful because God, whose power is seen from the vast expanse of the ocean to the majesty of snow-capped mountain peaks, has taken the time to provide for his people now living in the promised land. God faithfully blesses their crops (vv. 10-11), their land (vv. 9, 12) and their herds (v. 13) until they can do nothing but ¡°shout for joy and sing¡± because of his bountiful goodness.
God is aware of and grieved by our sins, but when we come to him in humble contrition, his forgiveness flows (1Jn 1:9). He wants to bless us more than we deserve. He is the God of 10,000 chances and, boy, do we need them!
-L.S.
¢Ê Application
Do we take God¡¯s goodness for granted? Worse yet, have we come to expect it? Do we pray with assumptions, that the Lord will just follow our lead because our plans and requests sound or feel like the right thing to do?
Stop and take stock of your life today. Sure, things aren¡¯t perfect. There will always be bills to pay, flat tires, illnesses and unmet expectations while we live on earth. But in the midst of it all, we can still marvel at the glorious goodness of our Father. Not only does he forgive all our sins, he wants to bless us on top of that! This is no Pollyanna philosophy-this is rubber-meets-the-road Christianity.
How do you respond to sin in your life? Do you get honest with God and ask for mercy, or when things get desperate, do you cling to that wickedly satisfying sin? If you are overwhelmed by your sin, give it to God. His forgiveness is bigger than anything we¡¯re ever done. Once he has washed you whiter than snow, the road to your heart is clear. And he will cover you with a blanket of blessings.
